ASK A PROFESSIONAL

My mature tree has been dropping leaves since the drought. Has the drought of “2012” killed my tree?

This has certainly been the worst drought I have seen in all my years as an arborist! We know many things about the effect of a severe drought on young trees, old trees, and declined trees. However, there are some things we do not know.

It is true that some trees that have turned brown, wilted, and dropped their leaves. Trees that have died as a result of this drought should be removed.

One thing we can be sure of is that a trained professional can tell if a tree is dead. But in many cases people have been condemning trees that have had leaf drop but are alive, and removing them as dead trees. A well-qualified arborist can tell if the tree still has stored energy, and if there is any chance for the tree to produce new foliage next spring. A knowledgeable arborist will monitor the tree throughout the winter and make remedial recommendations for winter and spring care. Our arboricultural consultants can provide this service for your trees.

We cannot predict the long-term effect of this drought but we can give the tree the chance it deserves. You may not need that saw just yet! As always feel free to call us with your questions or concerns.
